Who we are
Created in June 2007 by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, Fondation FondaMental is dedicated to mental disorders. Its goal is that psychiatric disorders should be considered as an illness like any other. Its role is to combine all intelligences to improve understanding, care and prevention and to give new hope to patients and their families and friends.
The work of Fondation FondaMental is centred primarily on the three most severe and incapacitating mental illnesses: bipolar disorders, schizophrenia and high functioning autism (Asperger’s syndrome). It also strives to improve the understanding and treatment of disorders such as depression or suicidal behaviour and turn the tide on mental illness.
A network of excellence for a major public health challenge
Psychiatry has come to a turning point in its history. Recent scientific and technological advances in neurosciences now offer the possibility for a new approach to psychiatric disorders and their causes. To this end Fondation FondaMental:
- mobilises psychiatrists and highly qualified researchers from more than sixty research laboratories and hospital services throughout France;
- cooperates with distinguished international teams;
- works towards establishing European networks for treatment and research in psychiatry.
