ECNP 2011: satellite symposium
At the occasion of the 24th ECNP Congress, the Fondation FondaMental organised a satellite symposium on "Bipolar disorder: shifting paradigm".
Bipolar disorders, a very common and highly disabling disease, represent an unmet need that deserves an urgent public health effort. Previously
called manic-depressive illness, they affect between 1 to 4 % of the population and begin in early adulthood.
This symposium gathered the best international specialists who described an innovative approach of bipolar disorders considering it as a multisystemic illness associated with comorbid cardio-metabolic disorders. This revised view challenge the development of personalized medicine allowing for each patient a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment of all facets of bipolar disorder (psychiatric, medical, cognitive…) leading to the prescription of a personalized mental health treatment program. Improving early diagnosis of patients paves the way for cure and recovery but also for prevention of bipolar disorder.
