Women's mental health: specific needs at all ages of life.

The FondaMental Foundation has set a new challenge: creating a single online resource hub to empower women to navigate challenges at every stage of life—from adolescence to pregnancy, post-partum, menopause, and aging. Affecting tens of thousands of women in France, certain mental health disorders are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated, yet have the potential to become severely debilitating.

NEW PROJECT

En Français

Women’s Mental Health: A Societal Challenge.

The women’s mental health platform will offer turnkey solutions for women across the lifespan—an innovation serving thousands of lives, ready to grow with your support.

Establishing a platform dedicated to women’s mental health addresses a crucial need for visibility, accessibility, and tailored care. Such a tool would centralize resources, listening services, reliable information, and care pathways specifically designed for women.

Women’s mental health is a major societal issue that is still too often underestimated. From childhood to old age, women navigate life stages marked by specific vulnerabilities related to biological, social, cultural, and economic factors. These intersecting determinants have a significant impact on their psychological well-being and access to care.

Certain periods of life are particularly critical: puberty, maternity, post-partum, menopause, and old age, where loneliness and precariousness can exacerbate psychological fragility. Yet, existing prevention and support services remain insufficiently gender-specific and often unsuited to women’s needs.

Taking action on women’s mental health by offering adapted resources for key issues across a woman’s entire life is therefore essential.

Supporting This Project

To successfully execute this project, the FondaMental Foundation must secure funding from donors who care about these issues. These funds will support the platform’s development, optimize its content and resources, ensure its distribution by health professionals, and allow us to measure its impact on patients.

The platform will be designed as an ecosystem dedicated to women’s mental health, offering a global, inclusive, and scalable approach.

This innovative initiative will be led by two leading researchers in psychiatry:

  • Professor Marion Leboyer - INSERM, AP-HP, UPEC, CEO of the FondaMental Foundation
  • Dr. Livia De Picker - Assistant Professor of Clinical Immunopsychiatry at Duffel University Psychiatric Hospital, Belgium

Stages of This New Project

We will develop new resources for women, aligning with the work of international experts from the Lancet Commission on Women's Mental Health. This international initiative, led by the scientific journal The Lancet Psychiatry, will convene specialists from around the world. They will be responsible for producing information, selecting self-assessment tools, and formulating concrete recommendations to address every specific mental health issue faced by women. This group will be coordinated by Dr. Livia de Picker (Belgium).

Additionally, we will utilize resources already developed by the Foundation for women, such as:

BAE: An application for girls aged 10 to 18, offering a personalized action plan to prevent suicidal ideation. Suicidal thoughts have significantly increased in this age group since the COVID pandemic, making the development of better prevention tools crucial.

LENA: A web and mobile platform dedicated to perinatal mental health, combining prevention, therapeutic support, and professional training. Currently, the leading cause of mortality during the perinatal period is suicide, often a consequence of diagnosed but untreated perinatal depression.

Within this framework, the platform will directly benefit from the Commission's work by aligning with its strategic guidelines and leveraging existing clinical and educational modules (suicide prevention, youth mental health, perinatal health, etc.). This will help reinforce the actions recommended by the Commission globally, while adapting them to local needs.

The first version of the women's mental health platform will focus on content development, launch, impact measurement, and continuous improvement based on advancements in knowledge and care:

Develop: Through the support of healthcare professionals, patients, and a multidisciplinary team (project manager(s), health professional, patients, service providers).

Communicate broadly to raise awareness of the platform.

Improve and optimize the site's content with a view toward personalized care.

Your generosity can allow us to accelerate the implementation of this project and address the needs of thousands of women.
